Trends—let’s talk about them! This word comes up in my world daily, and it’s one of the questions I’m asked most often when I’m hosting talks or chatting with clients: “What’s trending?” or “What’s coming next year?”

I know “trend” can sometimes sound like a dirty word. People worry it means something fleeting, unsustainable, or destined to date quickly. But from my perspective, trends are so much more than passing fads.

I work closely with the team at WGSN, looking at what’s happening in society and how those shifts translate into colour and design. My job—and honestly, the dream part of it—is to help you navigate these trends using my expertise in colour, so you can create spaces that feel elevated and not safe.

A huge part of my role is creating trend forecasts, working with experts from around the world to understand what’s coming next—whether for the season or the year ahead. But the real magic is distilling all that information into something inspiring and practical for you. Trends should never dictate your style; instead, they’re a tool to help you discover what you love (and just as usefully, what you don’t).

For me, trends aren’t about redecorating every season. Your home should be a space you love for years—a place that evolves with you. When I put together colour palettes for the year, it’s never just a marketing exercise. It’s about showing you that colour is alive and ever-changing. I create these palettes to evoke emotion, always using our existing 100 shades, curated in fresh ways to show how different they can feel when styled together.

How to Know If a Trend Is Right for You

If you’re drawn to a trending colour but feel nervous about committing, start small. Fashion is a brilliant testing ground—try that butter yellow jumper or those burgundy trousers and see how you feel. Or use Pinterest as your mood board: if you keep pinning a certain colour or sofa, pause and revisit those boards.

Work out what’s really catching your eye—is it the painted ceiling, the tonal scheme, or the overall mood?

The best question to ask: does this trend spark something in you? If it feels like you, it’s worth exploring. If not, let it go. Trends should inspire, not dictate.

Butter Yellow

This soft, optimistic shade is everywhere, and for good reason—it brings instant warmth and a sense of newness to any scheme. Try it on walls, textiles, or as an accent through ceramics and cushions.

Mint Green

I have a strong feeling that minty, fresh greens are about to overtake the earthier sages we’ve all loved for the past few years. Mint is equally timeless but often feels a bit bolder and more playful.

Trend Watch: Luminous Blue

Last month, WGSN (the global trend forecaster) revealed their Colour of the Year for 2027: Luminous Blue. I can already hear some of you thinking, “Not for interiors!” But after digging through my own Pinterest boards, I’m convinced this bold shade is more versatile than you might think.

Here are a few of my favourite ways to use Luminous Blue at home:

  • In the kitchen: Blue tiles are not for the faint-hearted, but the payoff is huge. Pair with soft pistachio greens, gentle off-whites, or warm wood tones for a perfectly balanced scheme.

  • On a statement piece: A Luminous Blue sofa or armchair makes a striking focal point. Try a tonal look with lighter blues, or cocoon the space with a warm peachy pink (like Pink 02) for a retro vibe.

  • Start small: Paint a window frame, archway, woodwork, or even add a piece of art in this colour. Small touches can make a big impact.

Because of its intensity, Luminous Blue is often used as an accent tone, which makes it an easy and impactful way to bring this trend into your home. These smaller doses can really elevate a space without feeling overwhelming. Think accessories or just a statement piece of art.

If you’re at the planning stage of decorating, here’s my best advice:

  • Use trends as inspiration, not instruction.

  • Start with small touches—a cushion, a piece of art, or a painted door—before committing to larger changes.

  • If you find yourself returning to a trend again and again, that’s a good sign it might be right for you.

  • Remember, your home should reflect you. Trends are there to spark ideas, not to set rules.

And if you’re still unsure, try the “fashion test”: wear the colour, live with it, and see how it feels before you bring it into your space.

Trends are a wonderful way to keep your home feeling fresh and personal, as long as you use them on your own terms. Whether you’re drawn to Luminous Blue, Butter Yellow, or Mint Green, there’s a way to make every trend your own—no pressure, just possibilities.

If you’re planning a refresh or just want to experiment, I hope this gives you both the confidence and the expert know-how to use trends in a way that feels right for you.

Until next week,
