If there’s one room that truly sets the rhythm for your home, it’s the kitchen.
After thousands of colour consultations, I can confidently say: the kitchen is the emotional core of your home. It’s where you start and end your day, where you gather, work, and unwind. And it deserves warmth, soul, and personality—not the clinical, sterile vibe of days gone by.
Every morning, my day begins in the kitchen. I wake up, head straight there, and boil the kettle—often before I’ve even opened my eyes properly! Making Zac’s milk, sipping my own tea, and just taking a moment to breathe sets the tone for the hours ahead. It’s a simple ritual, but it’s one that grounds me and reminds me that the kitchen is more than just a place to cook.
For me, the kitchen is where the day’s mood is set. Sometimes, it’s quiet and slow—just me and the kettle. Other mornings, it’s bustling with family, breakfast, and plans for the day. I’ve worked with clients who’ve taken this idea even further, lighting a fire in the kitchen and gathering around it for a morning coffee. There’s something magical about starting your day this way—it’s a gentle, intentional way to ease into whatever lies ahead.
Whenever I arrive for a client consultation—whether it’s in person or virtual—the first place we go is always the kitchen. The invitation is almost always the same: “Come on in!” And with that, we head straight to the kitchen table. It’s where my clients feel most relaxed, and where I get to know them best.
Over a cup of tea or coffee, we chat about what they love, what they don’t, and what they really want from their home. The kitchen is where stories are shared, laughter bubbles up, and dreams for the space start to take shape. It’s the room that sets the tone for the entire home, and the one that’s always ready to welcome you in, just as you are.
But first here are some things that have caught my eye this week:

A Room for Every Season (and Every Mood)
The kitchen is so much more than just a functional room. The kitchen is where life unfolds. It’s where you set the tone for your day, gather with loved ones, and make memories.
In winter, it’s a cosy sanctuary—layered lighting, a fire crackling, chairs pulled close for slow morning coffees. In summer, doors flung open to the garden, sunlight streaming in, the kettle boiling while the radio plays. It’s where breakfast is made, homework is done, and parties always seem to end up. It’s a room that works hard and carries the energy of your home.
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and it’s where I tend to spend the most time with my clients, because it’s the room they’re going to spend the most time in, too.
I urge you to really think about how you use your kitchen, no matter the size, and take your time on this room.
Let’s Talk Colour (and a Little Theory)
The kitchen is a brilliant space to inject your personality. Here’s what I’ve learned:
Keep walls neutral and light to open up the space.
You can be bold with the units—they’re the anchor of the room.
Paint the island or pantry in a complementary or contrasting shade to add a pop of personality.

Tonal colour layering (think soft pink walls with richer berry units) creates harmony with depth.
Darker lower cabinets ground the room, while lighter upper zones make it feel taller and airier.

Don’t forget the ceiling! A soft neutral or warm tone brings comfort and depth.
Artwork matters. Oversized pieces add emotion and make the kitchen truly yours.
Colour Pairings That Work
Tonal schemes: Harmonious, serene, perfect for modern kitchens.

Complementary schemes: Bold and lively—great for energetic spaces.

Neutral/earthy palettes: Timeless warmth and natural calm.

Texture & Touch
Bring in natural wood, marble, brass hardware, open shelving, bookcases and oversized artwork. These touches add personality and emotional resonance, making your kitchen feel like home.
A Tip from the Expert
If you’re feeling cautious, start with a warm neutral backdrop, add one bold unit (like an island or pantry), and layer in textures. Want to go tonal? Use lighter walls and richer-toned cabinets. Feeling bold? Combine complementary colours and anchor the look with darker lower cabinetry.
Look to the Garden
If you’re lucky enough to have doors or windows leading to the garden, introduce a soft blue or green to connect the inside and out. It’s a beautiful way to blur the boundary and make your kitchen feel larger, lighter, and more alive.

Ways to Elevate Your Kitchen (and Make It Really Yours)
Here are my go-to places for kitchen finds that add personality and warmth:
Abigail Ahern: Amazing rechargeable lights and little lamps to create cosy nooks. Overhead spotlights? No thanks. Let’s make it feel like home.
Pooky: Always a winner for accent lighting.
Zara Home: Great for stylish, affordable accessories.
Late Afternoon: The most gorgeous glasses, water jugs, cutlery, and crockery. Just mega.
Loaf: Perfect for accent chairs and kitchen tables—bring in soft furnishings if you have the space.
Glassette: Unique artwork and special pieces to make your kitchen truly yours.
The kitchen is so much more than just a functional room. It’s the heart of your home, the place where you set the tone for your day, and the space that carries you through every season. After helping so many clients with their kitchens, I know how powerful this room can be. So, take a moment to think about your own kitchen. What small change could you make to help it feel even more like the heart of your home?
And if you’re dreaming of a refresh, I’m always here to help. Because, honestly, there’s nothing I love more than helping you create a kitchen that’s truly you.
Until next time,
Tash
