My Colour Questions: A Guide to Choosing Your Palette.

Thinking about updating your home? Start here

My journey with colour isn’t just a job - it’s a passion. In fact, I have carried out over 6,000 room consultations, helping people use colour in their homes to create their dream spaces.

I love these colour consultations. Colour is so deeply personal, often tied to memories and emotions, and through these consultations, I really help a client unpick what they love and don’t love for their homes. I’m not an interior designer, I help give them the tools and confidence to choose the colours that will help create a home that feels authentic to them.

My approach is simple: colour should make you feel something. It’s not about following the latest trends but discovering your own personal style.

I believe everyone has the power to become their own colour consultant, cutting through the paint sample noise and trusting their own instincts to create a space that not only looks beautiful but feels incredible to live in.

Before I begin any consultation, I always encourage my clients to ask themselves these four questions:

  1. How do you want the room to feel?

Colour isn’t just visual - it’s a form of communication. Every shade tells a story and evokes an emotion. When you choose a colour, you’re actually choosing how you want to feel in that space. Do you want the room to feel cosy, calm, light, airy or dark and moody?

  1. How much light does your room get?

Colour will always look different in different lighting. Think about how much natural light your room will get and the direction your room will face. This is where undertones are so important when thinking about colours: north-facing rooms need warming up, so go for colours with a yellow undertone, whereas a south-facing room may need to balance out with a colour undertone.

  1. What’s staying in the room?

This is so important, and it’s easy to get distracted by your Pinterest inspiration, but it’s so important to think about what is already in your room. What colour is your flooring and curtains? Are you keeping any of the furniture? You can use these as a starting point to build a colour scheme around.

  1. When will you be using the room?

Really think about how you use your home and how you live in the rooms. Will you use this room all day, or will it just be used for a few hours in the evening?

By answering these questions, I hope you can start to unpick what it is you love and what will work for your space so you can create your dream home. Any questions, I’m always open to helping via Instagram.
