Last week’s ceiling chat really got the ideas flowing with you all. Thank you so much for all the lovely comments. My DMs were filled with some brilliant questions, especially about those architectural details that often fly under the radar. So, this Sunday, I thought it was only right we shine a light on two of my all-time favourite design details: picture rails and dado rails.
Now, before you think these are just for the grand old period homes, let me stop you right there. These beauties are totally having a moment in modern spaces, too. Whether you live in a charming Victorian or a shiny new build, there are fantastic kits out there that make adding rails pretty straightforward (and way more fun than you might expect).
I’ve seen clients transform their rooms with these simple, elegant additions, breaking up wall space with style, playing with colour in clever ways, and adding architectural warmth that feels anything but old-fashioned.
Over the next 5 minutes, I’ll take you through everything: the “what,” the “why,” and the oh-so-satisfying colour tips that’ll have your home feeling uniquely you. Whether it’s adding a cosy dado rail to ground your space or painting above a picture rail to draw the eye skyward, these rails are the secret sauce.
So grab your cuppa, and get set for some serious colour inspiration coming your way!
What’s the difference?
When I work with clients, one of the most common questions I’m asked is about dado rails and picture rails. And honestly, they’re absolute game changers when you know how to use them.
A dado rail usually sits around 90 to 100cm from the floor, roughly a third up the wall. Back in the day, it was super practical: protecting walls from scuffs and chair backs (yep, that’s why some call it a “chair rail”). But these days, I mostly see my clients choosing dado rails to break up big wall spaces and bring in some serious style and proportion. It’s such a clever way to add visual interest, and a perfect spot to play with colour or add panelling below or above. When we include dado rails in a project, I love watching how a room instantly feels more grounded, balanced, and so considered.
On the other hand, the picture rail hangs out high, think 30 to 50cm below the ceiling line. Its original job was to hang artwork without leaving nasty holes in your freshly painted walls (a blessing, especially in period homes). But these days, picture rails are like little canvases for creativity. They visually divide the upper wall, giving you the chance to do the kind of subtle, sophisticated colour blocking first-timers might not even think about. When I help clients explore colour up there, the room feels taller, more elegant, and instantly more finished.
Whether you go with dado, picture, or both really depends on your space and style. Dado rails are the champions of grounding a room and adding warmth, while picture rails bring in that graceful height and architectural drama. I like to think of them as your room’s best friends—quietly enhancing and tying everything together with colour and detail, but never stealing the spotlight.
Now for the inspiration
Let’s take a look at some real-life spaces that get picture rails and dado rails just right. I’ll break down what makes each image work so well, offer practical tips you can use at home, and show how thoughtful details (and a splash of colour) can instantly lift your space.
Hopefully, seeing these design choices in action will help you create your own dream home. Whether you’re thinking subtle tweaks or bold moves, there’s a spark of inspo here for everyone.
Inspiration 1:

One of my absolute favourite tricks, and something I always share with clients looking to transform living rooms or bedrooms, especially if they’re dealing with lower ceilings, is to paint the wall above the picture rail in a soft, gentle shade. This approach feels so fresh and contemporary, breathing completely new life into a classic feature and making the most of what’s often an overlooked detail.
Take this gorgeous example: they’ve chosen a lovely neutral for the walls, letting it flow seamlessly from the skirting, through the walls, and right above the picture rail. Then the cornicing and ceiling are a beautiful soft off-white. The magic here is in the subtlety; the whole room feels calm and connected, never chopped up by harsh lines. It’s a clever way to create the illusion of height, your eye travels up effortlessly, making the space feel open and slightly more elevated.
One detail I absolutely love is how the window frame has been picked out in a complementary tone. It softly draws your eye, highlighting the architectural details in a way that feels considered and stylish, never overwhelming. It’s these little, thoughtful colour choices that make your space feel truly designed, and uniquely you. Timeless, but with a contemporary twist.
Inspiration 2:

Here’s a beautifully traditional take that’s equally clever and much-loved by my clients who want their architectural details to really pop.
In this room, they’ve kept the skirting, picture rail, and ceiling all painted in a soft, clean white, set against warm neutral walls. Because the white is crisp but gentle, your eye is naturally drawn to the architectural mouldings, making them shine without overwhelming the space.
What I especially love, and often highlight to clients, is how they’ve carried the wall colour just above the picture rail. This technique visually lengthens the walls, allowing those characterful features to shine without ever boxing the room in or making it feel shorter. It’s a masterclass in balancing classic charm with a fresh, airy feel, perfect for anyone who wants to celebrate the gorgeous bones of their home while keeping things elegant and timeless.
Inspiration 3:

Here’s where things get seriously fun and creative! If you’ve got a picture rail—whether it’s in your bedroom, living room, or even the dining room—and your space has generous ceiling height, this is the perfect opportunity to bring in that bolder, more dramatic colour you’ve been eyeing.
One of my favourite techniques with clients who love a touch of the moody or want a more cocooning vibe is to use that upper wall section above the picture rail for a deep, rich shade. By starting your ceiling colour from the picture rail upwards, you’re visually lowering the ceiling, which adds both a sense of cosiness and drama. It makes your room feel more contained, centred, and incredibly inviting—especially glorious in a high-ceilinged bedroom!
What makes this example really sing is the pairing of that beautiful, deep burgundy ceiling with a warm white that has a subtle yellow undertone on the walls and woodwork. The contrast is just right, not too stark, which keeps the look sophisticated and relaxed. What really pulls the whole scheme together (and something I always encourage clients to try) is mirroring that bold ceiling shade in other details, like picking up the burgundy in your cushions or throws. It draws the eye around the room and makes everything feel considered and harmonious.
It’s a fantastic way for anyone who loves to experiment with colour, moody palettes, or just wants their space to feel unique, curated, and wonderfully warm. If you want a room that feels both bold and beautifully balanced, don’t be afraid to start your colour journey right at the picture rail.
Inspiration 4:

If you’ve fallen for wallpaper like so many of my clients, my advice is simple: embrace it wholeheartedly! Don’t stop at an accent wall, let it wrap around the whole room. This approach radiates confidence and instantly elevates your space, making it feel curated and cohesive.
Of course, I know wallpaper can be an investment (it’s one of the first things clients mention to me), and it can sometimes feel overpowering if you’re not careful. Here’s a brilliant solution I always recommend: paper just up to the picture rail. This clever tweak helps you keep costs in check and ensures the room remains balanced and light.
Take this standout example: the room features a gorgeous complementary palette of blue, burgundy, and a soft, warm white. There’s no harsh or stark white here; the warm white sets off the other colours beautifully, creating a space that feels welcoming and intentional. The choice to paint the picture rail in burgundy is particularly sensational: it becomes an instant focal point, anchoring the scheme without overpowering the rest.
Notice the blue stripes? They’re more than just a playful touch; they actually draw the eye upward, making the room feel instantly taller and more spacious.
And the thoughtful way these colours are echoed in the Babar print is just so clever, tying the whole design together effortlessly. Just epic.
So if you’ve been dreaming of wallpaper but worried about commitment, try this approach. It’s practical, stylish, and proof that classic design details can look utterly cool with the right touch.
Inspiration 5:

This room is easily one of my absolute favourites, such a brilliant balance of lightness and personality.
If you’re the kind of person who wants to keep your space feeling bright and airy, but you also want to celebrate those incredible architectural details, this approach is perfect. They’ve started with a warm white on the walls, a choice that’s endlessly inviting and keeps the whole room feeling open and fresh.
What really brings the magic, though, is the use of that midtone blue on the window frame, picture rail, and skirting. It’s an inspired pop of colour that frames the architecture beautifully and draws your eye straight to that stunning view outside. The blue gives a gorgeous accent without ever making the space feel heavy—the room stays light, calm, and never cluttered.
I love how your focus shifts from feature to feature, without being overwhelmed by colour or detail. This is such a clever way to highlight the special bones of your home while keeping everything relaxed and personal.
Inspiration 6:

Hallways are one of my favourite spots to dial up the drama, and I'm asked about this all the time by clients craving a bit more character in their homes. If you’re looking for the perfect area to be bold, a long, narrow hallway is absolutely it. Not only does it handle deeper colours with ease, but it’s also the ideal place to experiment with contrast and balance.
It’s also a genius solution for couples who can’t quite agree on going dark and moody versus keeping things light.
Here’s the trick I always share: let the deeper colour ground the space by painting it below the dado rail, and use a soft, lighter shade above. This anchors your hallway, instantly making it feel more spacious and giving that coveted illusion of height. Your eye is drawn upward, tricking your brain (and your guests’) into thinking the space is grander than it is.
As you can see in this hallway, do not forget the architectural details. If you have stairs, skirting, or a bannister running through, bring them into your colour story too. Wrap that palette around the whole space. It just looks amazing.
This approach works beautifully in any room, but it really shines in those hallways that are longing for a statement moment. Dramatic, clever, and surprisingly easy to pull off. It’s one of my go-to transformations for maximum impact with minimal fuss!
A key detail here is to keep things cohesive. Don’t be tempted to add a third colour into the mix! The wall above the dado rail and the ceiling should be the same soft shade. If you break this up with too many tones it can look choppy, but keeping it simple ties everything together seamlessly.
Inspiration 7:

Not everyone wants their spaces to feel bold or dramatic, and that’s absolutely fine! If you prefer something softer but still want a bit of interest and subtle contrast, this lighter, tonal approach to dado rails is a brilliant choice.
In this example, instead of going super dark below the dado rail, they’ve opted for a beautiful pinky beige on the panelling, with an even softer shade above. This gentle pairing keeps the room light and airy while still offering enough variation to make things feel layered and considered.
What really sets this design apart is the way the staircase comes into play; a lovely, complementary green adds a fresh twist without overpowering the scheme. Pairing it with a creamy runner brings warmth and softness underfoot, tying the whole look together beautifully.
This whole palette sits together so well.. The effect is inviting and harmonious, yet never dark or heavy - a gorgeous way to use a dado rail if you want to keep things light but far from boring. It’s a fantastic reminder that you don’t always need bold choices to create rooms with real character and style.
I truly hope these examples and tips have sparked some fresh ideas and given you the confidence to play with colour, proportion, and detail in your own home.
Remember, whether you’re working with a period property or a more modern new build, these architectural touches are such simple ways to add character, elegance, and that magic “wow” factor to your rooms. I love seeing how a few thoughtful choices can totally transform a space, and I hope you’re feeling inspired to make your dream home come alive now.
Catch you next time with more ideas, tips, and inspiration.
All my best,
