I'm here to share why black should be your go-to colour for creating cosy, calming, and character-filled spaces.

Black isn't just a colour; it's a statement. It absorbs light, making it perfect for creating focal points in your room.

When you use black as a backdrop, anything layered on top becomes the star of the show. This makes it an excellent choice for highlighting statement furniture, artwork, or architectural features.

Choose warm undertones for a cosy feel, and I would recommend an eggshell finish to reflect the light and avoid a flat appearance.

The photo above is of my own dining room, which I refreshed using jet black. Originally, I wanted to use black to disguise the fireplace, which really became a focal feature against the white wall when we first moved in. By painting the wall black, the same as the cast iron fireplace, it respects the original features while feeling more designed. This is a great tip for concealing TVs as well!

Another reason why I’m so in love with black on this wall is because it was really important to me that the books, art and ornaments became a focal point. The black as a backdrop creates the perfect opportunity to do this.

I’ve paired the jet black with a warm white on the ceiling, walls and woodwork and styled the space with light wood tones and a grounding green velvet on my dining chairs. This is my new favourite room in our home.

Here are my favourite  ways to incorporate black into your home:

  1. Colour Drenching: Don't be afraid to go all in! Covering walls, ceilings, and woodwork in black can create a cocooning effect, perfect for naturally dark or small spaces. This technique works wonders in north-facing rooms, absorbing shadows and blurring edges to add depth and personality.

  1. Accent with Black: If full-colour drenching feels too bold, use black as a strong accent. Paint woodwork black against lighter walls for a striking contrast. This looks particularly elegant in hallways or living rooms, especially when paired with a black fireplace

  1. The 50/50 Trick: Use black to create an optical illusion. Paint the bottom half of your walls black and the top half a lighter colour. This draws the eye upward, making the room feel taller and more spacious. Extend this to your furniture for a cohesive look

  1. Get Creative: Black is the perfect canvas for artistic expression. Create graphic designs or patterns on a feature wall to add a focal point to your space. This approach allows you to showcase your personality while maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic.
